New Car Seat Law Effective Tomorrow, 7/1/2011

Just a reminder that the new Georgia car seat law goes into effect tomorrow. All children under the age of 8 are required to be in a booster seat. Some children may be exempt if they are over 4'9 or have a written statement from a doctor based on a medical condition. If there are shoulder belts in the car, then weight does not matter, just the height and age requirement. If there are no shoulder available belts to secure a booster or child seat, then children must use a lap belt.

First convictions carry a $50 fine and 1 point. All subsequent convictions are $100 and 2 points.

Why booster seats? Seat belts are designed for adults and, without the proper seat, the shoulder straps often lay against the child's neck instead of their shoulder and chest. They also keep the lap belt low over the hips instead of across the belly. In addition, according to the Georgia Department of Highway Safety, children involved in car accidents are 59% less likely to be injured if in a booster seat than those just using a seatbelt.

JNJLAW recommends

  • ALL children under 4'9 use a booster seat for their safety
  • ALL children ride in the back seat until age 13
  • Do NOT use a booster seat if there is no shoulder belt to secure the seat
  • Children under 1 or less than 20 pounds ride in a rear facing seat located in the back seat
  • Children under 4 ride in a forward facing seat located in the back seat
  • Everyone wear their seat belts

There's more information available on the Georgia Child Passenger Safety website, including how to obtain booster seats if you cannot afford one.
